Aukey PB-Y14 20Ah Portable Battery

I Like big mAhs and I cannot lie

When it comes to portable charging banks, the more mAh/Wh the better. In this case the Aukey PB-Y14 has a lot of oomph in a decently slim package, in fact it has 20,000 of them. Thats enough to charge the iPhone XS about 7 times! In fact i was able to charge all of my half dead devices and still have enough to keep charging the next day.

Output Charging Rates

This portable battery bank has 4 different charging ports for charging your devices. Seeing as how its Portable its made to charge on the go where you didn’t have time to plug in or needed a refill in the field and in many of those situations you only have a limited amount of time to charge and get back doing what you were doing so choosing the right port and cable setup is imperative to get the max amount of charge as possible. The last thing you want to do is use the wrong combination and end up with way less power transferred than you could have. However as i went through each device most of the older devices didn’t seem to make too much of a difference which port it was in, however some of the newer devices did see a boost using either the Orange port or the USB-C Port to charge.

Input Charging Rates

Charging Rates varies depending on input type, and Charger source. When you have something as large as 20,000mAh battery, charge rates can make the difference of hours depending on your setup. As can be seen in the charts, when using a limited charger such as the default 5w charger from Apple that comes with the iPhone, you are limited to just about 5watts across the board. Similar output can be seen when switching to the 12w iPad charger with the USB-C cable maxing out just under 13w on average. When using higher output chargers such as the GoPro Supercharger or the Aukey PA-U38 charger you get higher output where cables tend to limit your speeds. USB-C obviously is king across the board with the USB-C-to-Lightning cable being a close second. Surprisingly Lightning trailed behind with my 3 foot cable possible being a limiting factor, i went back with one of my 6 inch cables to see if there is a difference and there seemed to be a bit of a jump by almost double in some cases. MicroUSB surprised me as well being as old as it is it was still able to hold up to around 10w of power with the chargers that could handle the output.

As you can see above the real difference was when i went out to my car and tried out the cables on my Aukey CC-Y7 Car charger. This charger has USB Power Delivery 2.0 and AiPower that seems to be able to just blow away any of the other chargers I tried so far. Of course none of the wall chargers have had Power Delivery, but as far as I know this battery unit is not enabled with that protocol. Regardless it seems to be making a difference here as you can see across the board it charges the fastest with this unit. I would like to try this similar test out with one of their PD Wall Chargers and see if i get a similar result.

Edit – As i was editing this i realized i saw on the writing on the bottom of the device it did specify that it indeed does have PD on both input and output, that would explain a lot!

Final Thoughts

The Aukey PB-Y14 really is one of the largest batteries before you start getting thick and heavy. The only larger batteries are the PB-Y7 and the PB-T11 however you either end up paying almost double the price or you end up losing key features. The slim design is really unique as you can slip it in your back pocket or jacket and not really feel it there and it can slide in your backpack next to a laptop or ipad. Thanks again to Aukey and #teamTechKey for allowing me to review this beast of a unit.
